Combined sensor system for surface inspection and
gap/flushness measurement

VMT SMA + Steinbichler ABIS II

We have developed an ideally coordinated sensor system concept for surface inspection and gap/flushness measurement together with our system partner Steinbichler Optotechnik GmbH.

In the automotive industry above all, surface quality and defined gap and transition dimensions on the outer shell of the vehicle are important assessment criteria – including when it comes to overall quality.
By combining cutting-edge, innovative sensors into a single, automated, production-related measurement environment, you increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of your production and quality assurance processes – and thus your product quality as well – in a single, coordinated inspection procedure.

Optical surface inspection

The ABIS II is an optical sensor system which can be used in many different stages of expansion and system concepts. It detects 3D surface defects and contrast-sensitive defects in individual parts and even complete body shells quickly and with great precision at an early stage. This efficiently reduces time-consuming touch-up work in subsequent process steps.

Gap and flushness measurement

The highly flexible, robot-based gap and flushness measurement system with the laser triangulation sensors from VMT yields extremely accurate measurement values – even over the entire course of the gap. This significantly enhances installation processes in terms of minimizing tolerances for gap and transition dimensions.

The sensor combination

The combination of both types of sensor systems provides you with an extremely efficient inspection process which includes all of the relevant quality attributes of the outer vehicle shell in a single cell cycle.

Advantages of the sensor combination

  • Maximum efficiency thanks to a combined measurement cycle for both quality inspections (surface/gap and flushness)
  • Highly cost-effective, since it minimizes space requirements and cycle times
  • Ideally coordinated sensor system concept
  • Customer- and production-specific design
